CHARLESTON, S.C. (UCFKnights.com) - With the opening round of the 2014 Powerade Cougar Classic in the books, UCF and Virginia are tied for fourth at the Yeamans Hall Golf Club. Wake Forest has a single-shot lead over Arkansas in team play and NC State is third, just five shots back.
In her collegiate debut, freshman Laura Sojo led the charge for the Knights, carding three birdies and shooting a 71 (-1) to tie for 14th overall after round one.
Play was suspended early due to inclement weather and again late in the afternoon but resumed each time after a short delay.
Scoring was not affected however, as 18 players turned in scores under par, a tournament record was tied and a local player made a splash with a single swing.
Sierra Sims, of Wake Forest, tied a tournament low shooting a 65 (-7) to help secure the day-one lead for the Demon Deacons. On the par 3 sixth hole, Mary Chandler Bryan of College of Charleston made a hole-in-one, the first round's only ace.
Ashley Holder and Monifa Sealy both turned in rounds of even par for the Knights. Holder carded four birdies on the day, three of which came on her front nine, but stumbled on the par 3 16th following the second weather delay.
Second round action is scheduled to begin Monday at 8:00 a.m. EST.
