FORT WORTH, Texas (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 18 UCF women's soccer team got back on track Sunday afternoon in a 2-0 victory over TCU, clinching its first shutout of the year.
Senior Jennifer Martin's first goal of the season was also the seventh game-winner of her career - the most of any Knight on the current roster.
"It was good to get one in and get my confidence back up. Hopefully it is one of many," Martin said. "Coming back and getting the win today was vital because it gives us that uplift to pick ourselves back up and dust ourselves off and get going again."
Martin battled with her defender and advanced the ball in the box to fellow senior forward Tatiana Coleman, whose shot was blocked out of bounds to draw a corner. Senior midfielder Alex Piercy sent the ball to the far side of the box where an awaiting Martin buried it in the back of the net just before the 33rd minute.
The Knights (2-1-0) wasted no time in adding on to their lead 2:20 later when redshirt sophomore Carlin Huegli fed her first career-assist to Coleman, who connected low to the far post for her third goal of the season.
UCF keeper Connie Organ kept the shutout intact in the 57th minute when she saved Brittany Little's attempt to center. She came through again in the 62nd minute when she trapped Kela Gray's dangerous ball to the near post.
TCU (1-3) nearly made things interesting when Michelle Prokof chipped a ball over a leaping Organ into the back of the net with roughly 11 minutes remaining, but the Horned Frogs were cited offside, and the score remained 2-0 in the Knights' favor.
"One of our goals was to get back on track and to see how this team will respond after a loss," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "That was really our focus and I think we accomplished that by the win, but also I think we grew from Friday, and we were able to improve in some of those aspects of our game today. Having a roster where we can play everybody off the bench was huge and always comes in big on a Sunday when there is heat and some people struggling with illness. It was a great team effort all weekend."
UCF returns home for a Friday night double-header, meeting Florida Atlantic at 7:30 p.m. following the men's match versus the Owls at 5 p.m. One ticket will cover entry for both games.
