EUGENE, Ore. - The UCF Track & Field team competed in two events on Wednesday to start the NCAA Championships at Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore. The 4x100 relay squad posted a time of 44.45 to finish in 11th, while senior Jen Clayton recorded a mark of 6.15m/20-2.25 in the long jump to earn 15th place.
Starting off the 4x100 relay was junior Kirsten Nieuwendam, who was recognized as one of UCF's EVERYDAY CHAMPIONS on June 10. She handed off to sophomore Christal Peterson before Clayton brought the Knights into third place before the final exchange.
Freshman J'Nea Bellamy legged-out the third-place finish in heat one by holding off South Carolina by 0.09 seconds. The time of 44.45 was the second fastest on the season for UCF, which was also achieved that mark at the UCF Black & Gold Invitational on March 22.
The top two qualifiers to the finals came from the heat as USC edged Florida with a mark of 43.08. UCF was 0.29 seconds away from eclipsing Florida State at 44.17 to earn the one of the two at-large berths into the finals on Saturday at 5:10 p.m. ET.
Clayton, who finished third at the 2013 NCAA Championships, recorded a long jump of 5.90/19-4.25 on the first attempt. She posted her top jump of the meet in her second chance at 6.14/20.25. There was a foul on the final attempt.
The Greenbelt, Md., native finished 15th and was 0.05 meters away from earning another three attempts in the finals that occurred later in the night.
UCF sent seven student-athletes to the meet, the second most in program history. The 4x400 relay team of senior Sandy Jean, Clayton, freshman Ashley Jocelyn and senior Afia Charles has its opportunity at the NCAA Championships on Thursday at 9:40 p.m. ET.
