Palm Coast, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 18 UCF Women's golf team spent Easter Sunday playing in the American Athletic Conference Championship at the Ocean Course of the Hammock Beach Resort in Palm Coast, Fla. The Knights battled Mother Nature and seven other teams to come away with a four-stroke lead going into Monday's second round.

Freshman Ashley Holder led the Knights, making birdie on the 18th hole and carding a 76 (+4) for the day. She finished tied for fourth on the individual leader board.

As if the overcast skies and light misting rain weren't enough, players also had to contend with a steadt15-20 mile-per-hour wind.

Conditions were brutal out there today, UCF head coach Emily Marron said. I told the players to just focus on hitting fairways and hitting greens. The wind can come from any direction on ocean courses, so it can be mentally exhausting trying to determine which strategy to impart on any given hole. We just had to get through today and put ourselves in a good position.

Fanny Cnops, Kristine Odaiyar and Monifa Sealy turned in identical first round totals of 77 (+5) to finish tied for sixth amongst individuals. The Knights managed just seven combined birdies on the day, as conditions made scoring rare.

UCF will look to maintain the lead as round two is set to begin at 8 a.m. Monday. Click here for live scoring and results.
