TAMPA, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Facing No. 7 seed Temple in the first round of the American Athletic Conference Championships, the No. 10 UCF women's tennis team delivered a 4-0 shutout of the Owls Thursday morning.
Up next for the Knights (7-12) will be No. 2 seed Memphis with first serve getting underway Friday at 9 a.m.
The Black and Gold made quick work of the doubles competition with Temple (8-11) to secure the first point of the day. Caroline Eberhart and Courtney Griffith cruised to an 8-3 result over Rebecca Breland and Dina Karina at No. 1, and Clare Mendell and Cortney Cesarini got by Alicia Doms and Minami Okajima at No. 3, 8-2.
Looking for just three more points to advance to the second round, UCF got them from the No. 1, No. 2 and No. 5 positions.
At No. 5, Mendell blitzed Anais Nussaume by giving up just one game in a 6-0, 6-1 win. The Knights went up 3-0 on Josephine Haraldson's 7-6(5), 6-0 victory over Doms at No. 1, and picking up the deciding point was Eberhart who defeated Yana Mavrina at No. 2, 6-0, 7-6(5).
