ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Inching closer to the American Athletic Conference tournament next weekend, the UCF women's tennis team welcomed Stetson to campus Thursday, but could not get the win as the Hatters walked away with a 4-3 victory.
UCF dropped to 5-12 in 2014, and Stetson increased its record to 16-5.
Of the Knights' 17 matches so far, 10 have been decided by 4-3 margins, and 13 by either 4-3 or 5-2 tallies.
The Hatters jumped on the Knights for the first overall point. UCF secured a win at No. 3 doubles when Clare Mendell and Cortney Cesarini defeated Lindsey Cable and Eveline Lepinay, 8-2, but the visitors grabbed victories at No. 1 and No. 3 for the 1-0 lead.
UCF responded right away in singles. Caroline Eberhart delivered a 6-4, 6-0 triumph against Isabella Fernandez at No. 3 and Cesarini topped MayaBlue Stauffer-MacDowell at No. 4, 6-3, 6-2. The Hatters retook the lead at 3-2 with wins at No. 1 and No. 2, but Mendell pulled out a close 6-4, 7-5 decision over Carolina Meregalli at No. 6. Down to the No. 5 spot, Eveline Lepinay gave Stetson the team win with a 3-6, 6-4, 6-2 result over Sofia Baptista.
UCF will close out the regular season Saturday at home against South Carolina State. First serve is scheduled for noon and admission is free.
