A total of 19 players made an appearance for the Knights against Iona (2-11), which saw sophomore left fielder Brittanne Gasser connect on a two-run homer to put the Knights up 7-0 in the sixth. It was the first career round tripper for the Sterling, Va., native.
Despite being credited with the loss against Purdue (13-16-1), sophomore Shelby Turnier fanned 10 in the complete game. In the fourth inning, the Palm Beach Gardens native had a 39.2 inning shutout streak snapped that dated back to the fourth frame against Jacksonville on March 5.
The Knights open American Athletic Conference play on Saturday with a doubleheader against Memphis at 1 p.m. It will be The Jedi Knights day at the UCF Softball Complex where fans are encouraged to come dressed as their favorite Star Wars character.
Game One: Purdue 2, UCF 1
A single to left by Tori Chiodo in the seventh scored Paris Andrew, who started the frame with a single, to lift Purdue to a 2-1 victory over UCF. Outfielders junior Kahley Novak and freshman Linnea Goodman tallied two hits for the Knights.
Turnier and Lilly Fecho, who improved to 10-8 on the season, combined for eight strikeouts over the first two innings and set the tone for the game. Fecho tallied seven strikeouts in the complete game.
Purdue in the third inning pushed Andie Varsho, who reached on an error, to third base on a single by Lindsey Rains to right. Rains attempted to take second, but was out as the throw came in to the shortstop Solis and fired the ball to Novak, who applied the tag just in time. A pop up to short ended the Boilermakers threat.
In the bottom-half, a two-out rally was started by Novak on a chopper up the middle. The Clermont native stole second and took third on the errant throw. Goodman came through with a single up the middle to put the Knights on top, 1-0.
After Turnier notched two outs in the fourth, the Boilmakers began a two-out rally of their own by tallying three hits and scoring the first run against the Palm Beach Gardens native in 39.2 innings dating back to March 5 against Jacksonville.
With runners on the corners for Purdue, the Knights ended the top of the fifth in dramatic fashion as a Turnier notched a strikeout and as the catcher junior Samantha McCloskey threw to second to catch a would-be base stealer, freshman shortstop Brittany Solis forced her back before the runner from third broke for home. The dart by Solis to home plate put McCloskey in the perfect position to tag the runner and turn two to end the inning.
Both Chiodo and Maia Monchek tallied two hit games for Purdue.
Game Two: UCF 7, Iona 2
A combined no-hitter was notched by Audas and Huhn in the 7-0 victory over Iona. The big hit for the Knights came from Gasser, who notched her first career home run, while UCF stole nine bases, one off the program record of 10 set vs. Penn last year.
After Sullivan notched a two-out single in the first inning, sophomore outfielder Mariah Garcia began the second with a base knock down the right field line. She swiped second and eventually scored on an RBI groundout by Solis.
The Knights pushed across two runs without a hit in the third to take a 3-0 advantage. A walk drawn by sophomore outfielder Taylor Wagner and quick steal of second allowed her to score on an errant throw sac bunt by junior outfielder Kahley Novak. The second error in the inning enabled Novak to cross the plate.
UCF tacked on two more runs in the fourth on an infield base hit by Novak with the bases loaded and single to left by Goodwin to extend the lead to 5-0.
Following a single by freshman pinch hitter Blaire Kelley, Gasser connected on the round tripper to left that put the Knights up 7-0 in the sixth.
