ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Another sunny day in Orlando was the backdrop for the UCF women's tennis team as it hosted No. 43 Memphis Saturday at the UCF Tennis Complex. However, the visitors spoiled the afternoon with a 5-2 win over the Knights.
UCF's record fell to 4-7 in 2014, and Memphis jumped to 10-6.
Memphis secured the 1-0 overall lead with doubles wins at No. 1 and No. 2. The Tigers held a 7-5 lead at the No. 3 spot before it was halted.
In singles action, Sofia Baptista was masterful at No. 5, earning a straight-set 6-2, 6-4 victory against Liza Tymchenko. As she walked off the court, a pair of Knights were still at work. At No. 2, Courtney Griffith split the first two sets with Stefanie Mikesz only to drop the match in a third-set tiebreaker, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6(3).
Closing out the day, Clare Mendell also went the distance in her contest at No. 6 vs. Alyssa Hibberd, and eventually pulled it out by a 6-1, 2-6, 7-6(4) margin.
After the match, UCF enjoyed USTA Campus for Kids Day as the student-athletes conducted a clinic with local children.
Next up for the Knights will be a home clash with Kansas March 21 at 2 p.m.
