ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - After tying the UCF seven-inning strikeout record with 15 earlier this season vs. Florida A&M, sophomore pitcher Shelby Turnier shattered the milestone by fanning 16 opponents during a one-hit shutout of Bowling Green, 2-0, on Sunday afternoon. The Knights posted a 4-1 victory earlier in the day at the UCF Softball Complex over Troy behind a strong effort in the circle by junior Mackenzie Audas.
Entering the fifth inning in the final game of the UCF Holiday Inn Spring Fling, Turnier (9-1) had a pair of strikeouts in each frame for a total of eight against Bowling Green (5-12-1). Following a sacrifice bunt that moved a runner into scoring position, the Palm Beach Gardens native sent the next eight Falcons down on strikes, which included five being punched out.
The previous regulation record was 15, which had been accomplished on four occasions by former standout Allison Kime, three times in 2008, and Turnier. Kime holds the school record with 18 strikeouts in an 11-inning 1-0 triumph at Florida State on Mar. 27, 2007.
Notching 10 strikeouts to improve to 7-6 on the season was Mackenzie Audas, who fanned 10 Troy (13-11-2) hitters.
A pair of three-hit and one-RBI performances were tallied by junior second baseman Kahley Novak and sophomore designated player Jessica Ujvari. Sophomore catcher Kalyn Cenal returned from an injury and tallied a hit in each contest.
UCF (16-7) continues its 23-game home stand on Tuesday at 5 p.m. against Southern Illinois. UCF faces a doubleheader against Florida Atlantic and Yale on Wednesday at 3:30. The Knights conclude the week with a twinbill on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. vs. FIU and No. 21 Notre Dame.
Game One: UCF 4, Troy 0
Two-hit games by Je. Ujvari and Novak helped the Knights score four times during the first two frames in a 4-1 victory over Troy. Run-scoring base hits were tallied by sophomore outfielder Mariah Garcia, freshman outfielder Linnea Goodman and Novak.
For the third-straight game, UCF manufactured a run in the first inning on an RBI by Garcia. Novak beat-out a single to third and took second on an offline throw to first. The Clermont native moved to third on a groundout and scored on a fielder choice.
A two-out rally for the Knights started with a double Je. Ujvari. Junior outfielder Maddy Schroeder sent a slow roller to short, which she beat out for a single.
The hit barrage for the Knights continued with Novak finding a hole in shallow left to bring home freshman pinch runner Blaire Kelley. A throwing error by the catcher in a failed pickoff attempt scored Schroeder before Goodman connected on an RBI double to left center, 4-0.
Troy plated its only run in the seventh after loading the bases on a pair of seeing-eye singles and on an error against sophomore reliever Mackenzie Huhn. Audas came in to shut the door and notch the victory.
Jaycee Affeldt fell to 6-7 on the season with five strikeouts in the complete game. Ebony Wright tallied a pair of base hits for the Trojans.
Game Two: UCF 2, Bowling Green 0
The Knights regulation strikeout record was set by Tunier with 16 during a one-hit shutout of Bowling Green, 2-0. The Knights saw clutch run-scoring hits by junior catcher Samantha McCloskey and Je. Ujvari in the fourth and fifth innings.
There were six runners that reached base for the Falcons against Turnier which included four walks, one hit and one defensive miscue.
UCF had opportunities with a runner on third in each of the first three innings, but were unable to push cross the first run of the game.
After Cenal was plunked by a pitch to start the fourth inning, the Knights moved the runner into scoring position on a sac bunt by freshman shortstop Brittany Solis. An RBI single up the middle by Je. Ujvari plated the first run of the game.
Tacking on an insurance run in the fifth was McCloskey with a two-out base knock through the left side the scored Kelley from third.
Turnier continued dealing in the circle and sent down the final eight batters on strikes to set the program seven-inning record.
The loss was credited to Jamie Kertes (3-8), who had four strikeouts in 4.2 innings before being lifted for Braiden Dillow. Katie Yoho picked the only base hit with single to center in the second.
