ORLANDO, Fla. ( - After a grueling day of hard-fought matches, the UCF women's tennis team dropped a close bout against rival No. 61 USF, 6-1, at the UCF Tennis Complex.

UCF falls to 3-3 on the year and is 0-1 after its first American Athletic Conference matchup of the season, while the ranked Bulls move to 4-2, 1-0 American.

The Bulls sprung into an early 1-0 lead with the doubles point being decided at the No. 3 position, where USF's Olga Martinez and Vera Bessanova edged UCF's pair of Caroline Eberhart and Clare Mendell 8-7 (5).

The Knights would fall just short in the first two matches of the day, providing the Bulls a 3-0 advantage. The Black and Gold dug deep, however, and took the final four matches to a third set. Josephine Haraldson took the first set and carried her match into a third, but Loreto Alonso snuck past, 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 at No. 1. Senior Courtney Griffith managed to claim the Knights' only point on the day by defeating Olaya Garrido-Rivas 0-6, 6-4, 6-4.

The UCF women's tennis team will take the home courts this Friday against Missouri at 10 a.m.
