ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The 22/24 UCF women's soccer team quickly made it a long night for UConn in its 4-1 win on Friday night at the UCF Soccer Complex.
The Knights (9-2-1, 2-0-0) peppered the Huskies (8-5-0, 2-1-0) with three goals in a 2:12 span in the second half that helped lift UCF to its third-straight win while improving its unbeaten streak to eight straight.
"We created just as many chances in the first half as we did in the second, but the difference was we were able to finish those chances in the second half," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "We talked about it at halftime - continue to be dangerous, keep getting after it. It was obviously very exciting to be able to do that against a very strong UConn team. To come away with this result is great."
After several close attempts at breaking through, freshman Lena Petermann delivered in the 37th minute to put the Knights on top, 1-0.
Senior Kristina Trujic dribbled in from deep on the left side to cross a ball right in front of the net to Petermann, who took one touch with her toe for her fourth goal of the season.
UCF started its flurry in the 58th minute when midfielder Jennifer Martin's corner kick first connected with defender Marissa Diggs. She forwarded it to Alex Piercy with a header, and Piercy netted her third game-winner of the year with a header of her own.
Piercy struck again 54 seconds later off an assist from forward Tatiana Coleman before Trujic teamed up with Petermann again just before the 61st minute to overwhelm UConn with a 4-0 advantage.
"It's the best feeling you can have as a player - to feel that you did your job," Petermann said.
Prior to Friday's game, the Huskies had allowed nine goals through 12 matches. They permitted the Knights to score nearly half that many through 70 minutes.
UConn did manage to avoid the shutout in the 73rd minute when the American's leading goal scorer, freshman Rachel Hill, beat goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado, who came out to attempt to stop the freshman on her breakaway.
Up next, the Knights close their four-match homestand Sunday at 1 p.m. against Temple. Sunday's game will serve as the Pink game in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. On Saturday, UCF Athletics will be distributing 1,000 free tickets for Sunday's game during registration for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure being held on campus. UCF Athletics will have a tent set up at IOA Plaza beginning at 10 a.m.
