ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - It's a feat that has been seven weeks in the making, and on Sunday, the Knights came through in the best way possible --- via a total team effort.
The No. 18/21 UCF women's soccer team broke a 26-year-old school record for the program's longest unbeaten streak (13 consecutive) with its 4-1 victory over Memphis. Nine different Knights tallied points in the game to deliver UCF's first win over its rival on its home field.
"A very special day today, I'm really proud of this team for breaking the record," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "Four different people scored today but that has been the theme of our season. We have a lot of different players that can score goals for us in a variety of ways, and I'm glad we were able to display that on such a special day."
Freshman forward Lena Petermann scored first for the Knights (13-2-2, 6-0-1) in the 17th minute after midfielder Sophie Howard played a ball into the box to forward Tatiana Coleman. With a defender on her hip, Coleman forward the ball to Petermann and she finished it for her seventh goal of the year.
Midfielder Jennifer Martin attacked next in the 21st minute with her second goal of the weekend, connecting with the far post after receiving a long, diagonal ball that sailed from beyond midfield from Coleman.
Freshman forward Kayla Adamek got in on the action in the 28th minute when defender Ashley Nicol sent a diagonal ball nearly identical to Coleman's into the box. Adamek beat her defender as Memphis keeper Maryse Bard-Martel came out to put the Knights up 3-0.
Senior Marleigh Howard capped the half with the first goal of her career. Freshman defender Caroline Bado sent a cross into the box that connected with sophomore Amanda Wilkin, who forwarded it on to Howard, and she chipped it high over the outstretched Bard-Martel for a 4-0 advantage in the 37th minute.
Memphis (9-7-0, 2-5-0) avoided the shutout after the break when Christabel Oduro flicked back a pass to Valerie Sanderson in the box, and she beat goalkeeper Connie Organ.
UCF's four goals mark the most either team has scored in a match during its overall series.
UCF hits the road for its final two matches of the regular season. The Knights face Houston at 8p.m. ET on Thursday before traveling to SMU on Sunday at 2 p.m.
