GAINESVILLE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - In a field which consists of nine schools all from the state of Florida, the UCF women's tennis team kicked off the Bedford Cup in Gainesville Thursday by posting a 10-1 combined record.
Schools competing this weekend are UCF, host Florida, Florida Gulf Coast, Florida A&M, USF, Stetson, Florida State, Bethune-Cookman and North Florida.
One round of doubles was held Thursday, and all three UCF teams in action advanced to the round of 16. Clare Mendell and Sofia Baptista moved on with an 8-5 win against USF's Alessandra Bonte and Hailey Grillo. Earning wins thanks to tiebreakers, Courtney Griffith and Cortney Cesarini combined for an 8-7(4) victory vs. FGCU's Elizabeth Means and Sarah Means while Annika Hepp and Cassie Hochwalt topped Stetson's Brittany Hill and Alexandra Lyubimova, 8-7(2).
The first round of singles also took place on day one, where six Knights only gave up a total of 17 games in their six main-draw victories. Reaching the round of 32 for the Black and Gold were Hochwalt, Cesarini, Griffith, Baptista, Hepp and Caroline Eberhart. In the consolation round, Mendell delivered a win as well to ensure all eight Knights will be in action on the singles courts during day two.
Josephine Haraldson had the day off thanks to byes in both doubles and singles.
Friday's matches will get underway at 9 a.m.
