TAMPA, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - Two second-half goals lifted the UCF women's soccer team to a 2-1 victory over Middle Tennessee on Sunday at the USF Soccer Classic.
The Knights (4-2-0) made the most of their offensive opportunities in the match as eight of their 11 shots were on goal, but Middle Tennessee goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer did her best to keep UCF out of the net in the first half.
On two occasions, Tatiana Coleman sent crosses into the box for midfielder Jennifer Martin and forward Kayla Darden, but Brouwer was able to grab the ball before it connected with its intended targets.
UCF broke through in the 60th minute when senior defender Ashley Nicole dribbled the ball deep into Middle Tennessee's territory and snuck a ball to the upper left corner of the net for her first goal of the season.
The Knights added a little cushion when junior Alex Major linked up with junior Alex Piercy in the 74th minute. Major dropped a cross in front of the net from the right side for an on-rushing Piercy, who finished to the left corner for her second game-winner of the year.
The Blue Raiders avoided a shutout in the 86th minute when Rachel Figg received a ball in UCF's territory. As goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado came out to try to deflect her attempt, Figg buried it.
The Knights return home next weekend for a 7 p.m. matchup against Stetson on Friday and a 1 p.m. kickoff Sunday against Brown.
