WASHINGTON, D.C. (UCFKnights.com) - It's not easy to get a result at No. 10 Georgetown - just ask any of the last 16 opponents the Hoyas have hosted. In fact, the last time they came out of a home match with anything but a win was in October 2011.
Yet, the UCF women's soccer team rallied from a first-half deficit to tie Georgetown in double overtime, 1-1, at Shaw Field late Thursday afternoon. The Knights (6-2-1) improved their unbeaten streak to five-straight games while preventing Georgetown (7-0-1) to continue on its roll of victories.
The Hoyas struck first in the 24th minute when Kailey Blain received a cross from Daphne Corboz and blasted it from 12 yards out for her first goal of the season and a 1-0 lead.
Junior Tatiana Coleman gave the Knights a lift just before halftime after she was set up with her second penalty kick in as many games when freshman Lena Petermann drew a penalty in the box. Coleman's game-tying goal was the first goal scored against the Hoyas since Aug. 30, snapping Georgetown's four-consecutive shutout streak.
"Once Tati put away the PK, it brought us to life," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "Georgetown kind of put us on our heels in the first 30 minutes. I think once we got a goal and we let some of the nerves go, we got back into the game. After we tied it, it was a back and forth game. It really could have gone either way."
Goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado made a career-high eight saves during the 110 minutes to secure the tie for her team. The last time UCF knotted a top-10 team was its 2-2 double OT decision at No. 6 Boston College last year.
"To come to their place and come away with a tie is not a bad result," Roberts Sahaydak said. "The main takeaway is we grew a lot from this, and I think we were successful in overtime as far as staying focused and playing strong. It should give us confidence going forward."
The Knights return to Orlando on Sunday to begin a four-match homestand when they host Florida Gulf Coast at 6 p.m. in their final non-conference matchup of the season.
