(UCFKnights.com) - The UCF men's soccer team was unable to overcome a late Old Dominion goal Sunday as the host Monarchs held on for a 2-1 victory at the Stihl Classic at the ODU Soccer Complex. Old Dominion's (2-2-0) Tim Hopkinson scored the game winner, his second goal of the match, in the 83rd minute.
After Hopkinson scored 13 minutes in the contest, UCF (1-2-2) countered with a goal from Romario Williams in the 21st minute. Williams' score, his second of the season, was assisted by Omar Vallejo.
UCF opened the Stihl Classic Friday by playing William & Mary to a scoreless draw. A pair of Knights - Steven Lamberta and Mason Miller - were named to the Stihl Classic All-Tournament Team.
"I am proud of the way that we competed this weekend against two very good teams," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "We had the hard-fought, double-overtime game Friday and then had a good start here today with six freshmen and two sophomores on the field. ODU put some pressure on us in the second half and capitalized with the goal. They are a good, experienced team, but we'll learn from facing these two good teams and continue to get ready for conference play."
The Knights were playing their first true road match of the year Sunday. One of the nation's premier programs, Old Dominion was edged by No. 1 Creighton, 2-1, in double overtime Friday.
UCF will return to Orlando for a pair of matches later this week. The squad will host local rival Stetson Wednesday before making its American Athletic Conference debut Saturday against No. 16 Louisville.
Zach Biggs made his first collegiate start at goalkeeper for the Knights Sunday. The redshirt freshman stopped four shots. Hopkinson's game-winning goal was a header off a corner kick.
