ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The UCF women's soccer team dominated in its 4-0 win over Stetson on Friday night, clinching its fourth shutout of the season.
"The goal for this game was to get back to what our foundation was. Our motto this season has been `best is our standard,' and I'm really proud because they took that to heart tonight," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "Not only did we get the result, but we put in a great performance."
Seven different Knights were responsible for the team's 14 points on the night as UCF (5-2-0) outmuscled the Hatters (2-3-0) in nearly every statistical category: shots (29-3), shots on goal (10-0) and corners (9-0).
Freshman Kayla Adamek, who received her first starting nod, was responsible for UCF's two first-half goals, including the game-winner. Adamek struck in the 29th minute after a corner kick by Jennifer Martin landed in the box only to be sent back out to Ashley Nicol, who threaded the ball into her teammate in front of the net for the 1-0 lead.
Sophomore Amanda Wilkin made an almost immediate impact after subbing in the 31st minute when she forwarded a ball from midfield to Adamek, who took a few touches to breach the box before finishing strong in the 34th minute for a 2-0 edge.
"As a freshman, she has come in and has won the respect of all of her teammates with her drive and her work ethic," Roberts Sahaydak said. "I'm so glad that she was rewarded - not only to get her first start, but to get two goals in her first start, that is pretty special."
After the break, UCF added another insurance goal in the 71st minute when Nicol sent a ball in from the right side to sophomore midfielder Megan Fish in front of the net. Fish headed the ball nearly on the goal line and freshman Taylor Townsend got a foot on it in the last second to score her first goal of the season.
Katy Ling wrapped up the match with her second goal of the year in the 79th minute when she booted the ball from Wilkin, who advanced the ball she received from Lena Petermann quickly to the senior at the top of the box.
With the win, UCF remains undefeated against the Hatters in the overall series, 19-0. The Knights stay put at home Sunday at 1 p.m. against Brown.
