(UCFKnights.com) - The UCF men's soccer team withstood a big second-half from William & Mary to record a scoreless tie Friday as part of the Stihl Classic at the ODU Soccer Complex. Playing close to home, the Tribe posted 20 overall shots, 11 in the second half and a total of five shots in 20 minutes of overtime, but the Knights (1-1-2) held on to salvage the draw.
UCF's Sebastian Evers registered seven saves against William & Mary (1-2-1). The Knights will conclude the event in Norfolk Sunday, facing host Old Dominion at 2:30 p.m.
Six UCF freshmen were playing away from Orlando for the first time on the collegiate level and head coach Bryan Cunningham was pleased with the result Friday.
"I am proud of our guys to hold on against a good William & Mary team," Cunningham said. "We weathered the storm and showed a lot of character the last 10 minutes and in overtime. We had some good (offensive) looks in the first half. William & Mary was on top of us in the second half, but we settled down at the end and I am very proud of our young team."
The Knights totaled 11 shots and Omar Vallejo attempted both of the squad's shots on goal.
The Knights were playing away from home for the first time this season. UCF began the campaign with three exhibition contests followed by three regular-season matches at the UCF Soccer Complex.
