TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (UCFKnights.com) - The No. 17 women's soccer team put No. 3 Florida State's school-record 20-game home winning streak in jeopardy, but the Seminoles were able to escape Sunday with a 1-0 overtime victory.
After 95 scoreless minutes of play, FSU secured the golden goal after drawing a corner kick as Berglind Thorvaldsdottir's deflected shot by UCF senior goalkeeper Lianne Maldonado was rebounded by Kirsten Crowley.
"We were the dominant team in the first half, and during that first 45 minutes, I think we showed that we're one of the best teams in the country," UCF head coach Tiffany Roberts Sahaydak said. "In the second half, unfortunately we had a hard time getting ahold of the ball. Florida State is a good team. Their strength is very good and we caught ourselves in defensive mode for a lot of the second half. I think it took a toll on us physically. But our effort was there, and I think there's a lot of positives to take away from the game."
UCF is just the second team (Virginia) to push FSU to overtime at home during the regular season through the team's historic win streak.
The Knights came close to putting one in the net twice during regulation. Midfielder Jennifer Martin's header just before the 60th minute marked UCF's first shot on goal. Forward Tatiana Coleman's attempt came not long after but again FSU keeper Kelsey Wys managed to get in front of the ball.
UCF (2-2-0) will travel to Tampa for the USF Soccer Classic on Friday to face North Florida at 4:30 p.m. before meeting Middle Tennessee on Sunday at noon.
