DES MOINES, Iowa (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF track and field team wrapped up its successful run through the USA Outdoor Championships on Sunday.
Running in front of a national television audience, junior sprinter Aurieyall Scott barely missed automatically qualifying for the 200-meter finals by three-hundredths of a second. Competing alongside three-time NCAA outdoor 200M champion Kimberlyn Duncan, world champion Shalonda Solomon and Nike's LaShauntea Moore - an Olympian and the 2007 World Championships bronze medalist - Scott's time of 22.90 (-1.1) with the headwind placed her fifth in the heat and 11th overall.
The performance capped a memorable and historic meet for the Knights, who saw Octavious Freeman clinch a spot on Team USA for this August's World Championships in Russia and freshman Alexis Faulknor become the USA's junior long jump champion.
Faulknor will go on to represent the Red, White and Blue at the Pan American Championships in Colombia in August.
Both the 100M and 200M school records were broken throughout the four-day event, and UCF's dynamic duo of Freeman and Scott became the first collegiate teammates in NCAA history clock sub-10.97 times in the 100M.
"We had a great weekend. It was a great ending to a great era for me," said head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert, who recently signed on as the University of Southern California's director of track and field. "I set out to build something, and I think we did it. I want to thank my staff and everybody at UCF, especially President Hitt, Keith Tribble, Todd Stansbury and Jessica Reo, and everyone in Orlando. I expect the team that's there to win the national championship. I leave all my lessons with them. I love UCF and I will never forget Black and Gold."
