ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Kyle Cox, who concluded his playing career with the UCF men's soccer program last fall, is one of 12 recipients of a Conference USA Jim Castañeda Postgraduate Scholarship, commissioner Britton Banowsky announced Tuesday. The conference annually presents the $4,000 Postgraduate Scholarship awards to graduates as selected by the C-USA Faculty Athletics Representatives and approved by the Board of Directors.
"I am extremely honored and excited to receive this scholarship. I am privileged to represent UCF Athletics and the University with this award," Cox said. "I am honored that Conference USA wants to recognize me. I have always had high goals for myself academically, and diligence and time management helped me get through the challenges of being a student-athlete."
He plans to secure an internship in the medical field this upcoming year before enrolling in medical school in 2014.
An Orlando native who attended Dr. Phillips High School, Cox earned his bachelor's degree in biomedical sciences with a minor in business administration. He graduated with a 3.913 grade-point-average and made the UCF President's Honor Roll with a 4.0-term GPA his final five semesters. Cox received the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal each year during his time as a Knight.
This past spring, he received UCF's Dr. Richard Lapchick Award, which measures athletic and academic achievement and community service, and the UCF Student-Athlete Advisory Committee PRIDE Award. In May, he was part of the first Knights Without Borders trip, traveling to Panama to help repair an orphanage.
"Kyle is certainly worthy and deserving of the scholarship and we couldn't be more happy for him," UCF head coach Bryan Cunningham said. "Throughout his time at UCF, Kyle was always committed to academics, but was also a great teammate and representative for our team."
The award for Cox marks the second-straight year that a UCF men's soccer player has received the C-USA postgraduate scholarship. Spencer Scott was honored in 2012.
Cox joined the Knights in 2009 and was a member of two teams (2010, 2011) that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Championship.
This is the fifth year the award has been named for Dr. Castañeda, who served Rice University for 46 years as an educator, coach and Faculty Athletics Representative before he passed away in November 2008.
