WATERLOO, Ontario - UCF golfer and Seaforth, Ontario resident Robyn Doig fired six birdies in a row en route to earning the Ontario Women's Match Play title at Grey Silo Golf Club in Waterloo.
The 21-year-old Seaforth Golf Course member lit up the course on Friday afternoon in the final match against Richmond Hill's Alina Rogers, a member at Beacon Hall Golf Club. The pair found themselves squaring off in the final after Doig beat Ottawa's Kiersten Klekner-Alt in the morning's semi-final match with a 2 and 1 victory while Rogers topped 1998 champion Judith Kyrinis in a match that went to one extra hole in the other semi-final.
Doig and Rogers, seeded number one and two respectively, took to the course and played steadily through the first six holes before Doig went on her birdie streak, winning holes 7 through 12 and ending the match with a 7 and 6 victory.
"I made six birdies in a row, and I've never done that before," said an elated Doig. "When we finished, Alina and I just laughed because we knew that there was nothing she could do. It was pretty crazy."
The win in Doig's second major provincial tournament victory; she is the defending Toronto Star Women's Amateur champion, also a match play competition.
"When I work on my game I really think about taking it one shot at a time," Doig said. "With match play you can really do that, especially since once you finish the hole it doesn't matter as much what you did, you can move on to the next one.
The University of Central Florida women's golf team member is coming off her sophomore year of collegiate golf and is looking forward to her competitive season at home in Ontario.
"I had an OK year (at school), so to come back home and win my first tournament is refreshing and really exciting for the season ahead," said Doig.
She will next attempt to defend her Toronto Star title starting on June 24th at Barrie Country Club before competing in the Ontario Women's Amateur championship scheduled for July 16-18 at Markland Wood Golf Club in Etobicoke.
The Ontario Women's Match Play was first played in 1982 and has several notable past champions including World, Canadian and Ontario Golf Hall of Fame member Marlene Streit, six-time champion Mary Ann Hayward, Terrill Samuel, and Heather Kuzmich. The Golf Association of Ontario would like to thank Grey Silo Golf Club for hosting the event and for their continued support of golf in Ontario.
