ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Seven members of the UCF baseball team have shipped off all across the nation to sharpen their skills in various collegiate summer leagues. With some members of the Knights already into their seasons, here is a look at where they are and how they are doing.
First baseman James Vasquez is already making noise in the Valley League for the Staunton Braves. You might remember a year ago that the Palm City native was named a Perfect Game Summer All-American for his .418 batting average with 12 homers and 42 RBI in the Cal Ripken League.
Vasquez has picked up where he left off as he currently leads the Valley League with three homers and 18 RBI through just seven games. Shortstop Tommy Williams is also playing with his infield mate at UCF with the Braves.
In the Valley League for the second straight season, outfielder JoMarcos Woods has also gotten off to a strong start for the Waynesboro Generals, totaling a .350 average with a team-high four stolen bases in six games.
Rising juniors OF Erik Barber and LHP Harrison Hukari also kicked off their summers in wood-bat action with the Columbia Blowfish in the Coastal Plain League. Barber has already gone deep on the season with a homer and three RBI.
A pair of arms for the Knights will begin action later this week in LHP Eric Skoglund and RHP Tyler Martin. Skoglund will return to the prestigious Cape Cod Baseball League and represent the Bourne Braves.
Martin will have a much further trip and venture some 4,681 miles to Palmer, Alaska, and play for the Mat-Su Miners in the Alaska Baseball League. The rising sophomore isn't the first from UCF to head out to The Last Frontier state as Chris Taladay and Jimmy Reed went last year, and former Knight Shane Brown went in 2009.
