TULSA, Okla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The sixth-seeded UCF softball team battled, but lost 3-0 to No. 3 seed Tulsa in the first round of the Conference USA Championship on Thursday afternoon at Collins Softball Complex. The 2013 campaign is likely over for the Knights (29-25) as they are not expected to receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament.
Freshman Kalyn Cenal showed off an impressive arm as threw out Tulsa's Caitlin Everett on a stolen base attempt in the bottom of the first inning. Everett was 20 for 22 in steals coming into the contest and Cenal made a perfect snap throw to 2nd to record the out. The Tampa native was inserted as the Knights' starting catcher in early April and threw out four of nine (44.4%) of would-be base stealers.
The Knights got their only hit of the game off the bat of sophomore Kahley Novak. Novak closed her season strong by extending her hitting streak to 10 games with a second inning single. The Clermont native raised her batting average 45 points during her hot streak and closed her season with a .257 mark, good for third best among UCF's regular starters.
UCF got a gutsy performance from sophomore Mackenzie Audas as she allowed six hits and three earned runs in six innings of work. The Plant City native battled flu-like symptoms all week and picked up three strikeouts to cap her season with 224.
