TUSCALOOSA, Ala. (UCFAthletics.com) - It was an excellent day on the water for the UCF rowing team as it earned a pair of big victories at the Alabama regatta. The Knights earned wins in the novice eight and 2nd varsity eight races.

Each squad dealt with some tremendously strong currents which caused slower times as the teams were racing against the water all morning on the Black Warrior River.

"It was a great day of racing!" head coach Becky Cramer said. "The team really pushed hard and stepped up in each of their races. We are learning more each week and it was great to see them execute the things we have been working on in practice today."

The Knights' novice 8 boat consisting of coxswain Kristy Peck, Alexa Ronelli, Ashley Flowers, Adrianna Chimelis, Christa Bergquest, Amy Compare, Andrea Hebditch, Heidi Seymour and Jamie Peck competed against a pair of novice boats from Alabama and earned a big victory with a time of 7:53.4.

The biggest win for the Black and Gold came in the 2nd varsity eight event. The team of C. Monica Rooker, Dana Distefano, Lauren Copeland, Erin Corrigan, Lauren Wasko, Carla Ortiz, Angelie Denizard, Kelly Thiele and Kayla Thieken zoomed past the 2V8 boats of both Alabama and West Virginia with a time of 7:48.4.

The first varsity four almost made it a trifecta for the Knights, but the boat was just edged at the line in a photo finish by Alabama. UCF just missed out on the victory by 0:00.2 tenths of a second. The varsity eight squad competed hard in the last race of the day and defeated Alabama's top boat. However, the Knights finished 1.7 seconds off West Virginia's first place time.
