ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The No. 64 UCF women's tennis team suffered its first home loss of the season in a 6-1 affair against DePaul Saturday. The match took place on USTA Campus Kids' Day at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The Knights fell to 12-6 on the year and 7-1 at home, while the Blue Demons improved to 11-7.
Although the Blue Demons took the No. 1 doubles match, UCF's No. 3 team of Jenna Doerfler and Sofia Baptista climbed back from a 6-3 deficit to defeat Carolin Neumann and Kelsey Lawson, 8-6. The doubles point came down to No. 2, where Caroline Eberhart and Courtney Griffith lost a heartbreaking 9-7 decision to Jasmin Kling and Patricia Fargas.
DePaul would build upon its lead in singles and ultimately take a 4-0 lead to clinch the match. However, at the No. 1 position Genevieve Lorbergs was looking for her fourth victory over a ranked opponent when she took on No. 81 Matea Cutura. After a close 6-4 win in the first set, Lorbergs cruised in the second set to the tune of 6-2, locking down her fifth-straight singles triumph. It also pushed her record to 19-12 on the year, and 13-4 at the top singles spot.
The Black and Gold came close to picking up two more wins, but Doerfler (No. 2) and Griffith (No. 5) fell just short in their third-set super-tiebreakers as they each lost 10-8.
The Knights' final regular-season road match is up next as they travel to Stetson April 10 at 2:30 p.m. The regular season closes Saturday, April 13, at 2 p.m. vs. Notre Dame, and admission is free.
