HOUSTON (UCFAthletics.com) - Facing the No. 33-ranked team in the country, the UCF women's tennis team dropped a 4-0 quarterfinal match to Memphis Friday at the Conference USA Championship hosted by Houston. The Knights wrapped up the 2012-13 season with a 14-8 record, marking their most victories since 1999-00 when UCF went 19-6.
The Black and Gold was the No. 6 seed for the tournament and was going up against a Memphis (17-5) squad which was seeded third and had a bye the day before.
A day after matches started with singles play due to rain, Friday's action opened up with doubles competition. However, the Tigers seized momentum by grabbing victories at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions for the early 1-0 margin.
Memphis doubled its lead in singles when No. 48 Courtney Collins got past No. 124 Genevieve Lorbergs at No. 1, 6-0, 6-2. At No. 4, Liza Tymchenko pushed the Tigers' advantage to 3-0 by defeating Caroline Eberhart, 6-3, 6-4, and the match closed out at No. 2 when Tiffany Welcher defeated Jenna Doerfler, 6-2, 7-6 (results updated by C-USA and Houston after 10 p.m. ET April 19).
With the season completed, Eberhart finished as the team leader with 25 singles victories, which rank all alone in fourth place on the UCF single-season register. Meanwhile, Lorbergs posted 22 wins to put her in a tie for ninth on the same list, and Haraldson collected 21 to place her in 15th. In doubles play, the combination of Haraldson and Lorbergs had 20 victories, which were one shy of matching the single-season school record.
