HOUSTON (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's tennis team opened day one of the Conference USA Championship Thursday with a 4-1 win vs. No. 11 seed East Carolina at the University of Houston. The No. 6 seeded Knights (14-7) have won a first-round match every year since its first season in C-USA in 2005-06.
Due to inclement weather, the schedule of play was altered for all of the teams competing, and the matches began with singles action. For the Knights against the Pirates (12-12), they kicked off competition outside at the John E. Hoff Tennis Courts, and eventually they finished inside the Galleria Tennis and Athletic Club.
The top three singles contests were first up, and Genevieve Lorbergs put UCF on top, 1-0, with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Neena Wanko. It was Lorbergs' first match in the national rankings as she entered play at No. 124 in the nation in singles. Meanwhile, it stretched her winning streak to eight-straight matches and improved her dual-match mark to 16-4 at the No. 1 spot.
Giving the Knights their second point, Josephine Haraldson delivered a 2-6, 6-1, 6-0 triumph over Yilian Zhang at No. 3. Although the Pirates earned a win at No. 2 to cut it to 2-1, freshman Caroline Eberhart bumped UCF's lead to 3-1 thanks to a 6-1, 6-2 decision against Danielle Terpko at No. 4. For Eberhart, she stands all alone in fourth place on the Knights' single-season victories chart with 25 singles wins this year.
And giving the Black and Gold its fourth and deciding point of the day, Sofia Baptista came through in a tough three-set affair by stopping Abby Richmond at No. 6, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. With UCF picking up that fourth point, the rest of the matches were not completed.
UCF now advances to the quarterfinals and will take on No. 3 seed Memphis Friday at 3 p.m. ET.
