(UCFAthletics.com) - Playing its final regular season match of the spring, the UCF men's tennis team could not top USF Sunday, falling 5-2 at the UCF Tennis Complex. UCF will now turn its attention to the Conference USA Championship, which opens Thursday in Memphis, Tenn.
The event will serve as the Knights' final C-USA tournament before moving to the American Athletic Conference next year.
The Bulls (10-9), who entered the contest having won two-consecutive matches over ranked foes, took the doubles point and then won four of six singles tilts.
The Knights (10-9) recorded singles victories at No. 3 and No. 5. At the No. 3 spot, Matthew Gladstone bested Federico Sabogal, 7-5, 7-6. Facing Juan Carlos Acuna at No. 5, Francesc Aulina held on for a 6-2, 2-6, 7-6 triumph.
"The guys laid it on the line today and came up just short," UCF assistant coach Jordie Kindervater said. "Unfortunately, we couldn't sustain momentum after getting up early in doubles and that cost us in the end. We are playing our best tennis at the right time and can't wait to play at our upcoming conference tournament."
The Knights were facing their ninth in-state opponent of the spring.
In doubles competition, the Knights picked up a win at No. 2 where Juan Bolona and Gladstone defeated Acuna and Sabogal, 8-4.
