ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The USTFCCCA released its annual region award winners Monday, and Aurieyall Scott has been selected as the South Region Track Athlete of the Year while head coach Caryl Smith Gilbert earned her fifth Coach of the Year honor.
Scott, who was named to the Bowerman Award Watch List last week, earned Conference USA Performance of the Meet honors with titles in the 60 and 200 meters and in the 4×400 relay. Her championship-winning and collegiate-leading time of 7.13 in the 60M was the fifth-fastest time in collegiate history and makes her the fourth-best performer in the event all-time.
She defeated reigning Bowerman award winner Kimberlyn Duncan in the Tyson Invitational 200M with a then-world leading 22.68. She is currently ranked No. 2 in the event both in the world and among collegians heading into this weekend's NCAA Indoor Championships.
Scott, a Greenbelt, Md., native, becomes the second Knight to earn the title as Octavious Freeman was bestowed with the award last year.
Smith Gilbert, now in her sixth season at the helm of the Knights, guided her team to its fifth Conference USA Championship since 2010, scoring a program-best 132.5 team points. Specializing in the sprints and hurdles, she is the only coach to have two sprinters rank among this year's collegiate top five in the 60M in No. 1 Scott (7.13) and No. 3 Freeman (7.19).
Smith Gilbert was named the Indoor Coach of the Year in 2011 and has earned the distinction in three of the last four outdoor seasons (2009, 2011, 2012).
