WILMINGTON, N.C. (UCFAthletics.com) - Celebrating Easter Sunday on the road, the No. 72 UCF women's tennis team also celebrated another victory by topping UNC Wilmington, 5-2. It was the Knights' fifth-consecutive win, which moved their record to 12-5 on the season.
Facing a Seahawks (10-6) program that had won four in a row entering the day, UCF was certainly challenged all day long. Looking to claim the first overall point when doubles play began, the Knights picked up a win at the No. 1 spot when Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson pulled out an 8-5 triumph against Olga Blank and Christine and Kharkevich. The duo of Lorbergs and Haraldson are now 19-8 together this season, and 12-3 at the top position.
With UNCW earning a win at No. 3, it came down to No. 2 where Courtney Griffith and Caroline Eberhart saved a couple match points en route to a 9-7 victory over Angie Sekely and Alyssa Ritchie.
Lorbergs stretched the UCF lead to 2-0 in singles by way of a 6-2, 6-0 affair vs. Sekely at No. 1. However, the Seahwaks tied it up thanks to victories at No. 4 and No. 5. The Knights put an end to that run, though, by taking the final three matches of the day. Haraldson posted a straight-set win by topping Blank at No. 3, 6-4, 6-4, while Jenna Doerfler and Sofia Baptista notched victories in three sets apiece to close out the trip to the Tar Heel State.
The Black and Gold has three regular-season matches in the month of April, and it all begins Saturday at 2 p.m. against DePaul.
