GREENVILLE, N.C. (UCFAthletics.com) - Temperatures in the 40s and 50s greeted the No. 72 UCF women's tennis team in Greenville, N.C., but the Knights warmed things up as the day progressed thanks to a 6-1 victory at East Carolina Friday. It was the Knights' first match since being ranked in the top 75 earlier in the week.
With the win, UCF improved to 11-5 on the season as well as 6-0 all-time against the Pirates (10-7).
Getting off to a 1-0 lead, UCF swept the doubles point vs. the home team Friday. At No. 1, Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson came through with an 8-4 win against Neena Wanko and Nicole LaDuca. Meanwhile at No. 2, Courtney Griffith and Caroline Eberhart bounced Melis Tanik and Yilian Zhang, 8-6, and Jenna Doerfler teamed up with Sofia Batista for an 8-5 triumph over Dana Gray and Danielle Terpko.
The Black and Gold then used three straight-set singles victories to clinch the overall match. Lorbergs had little trouble in a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Wanko at No. 1 and Haraldson collected a 6-1, 6-4 decision against Zhang at No. 3. Grabbing the fourth point for UCF, Griffith defeated LaDuca at No. 5, 6-1, 6-3.
After each player netted a 6-0 win in the first two sets, Baptista took down Abby Richmond at No. 6, 0-6, 6-0, 6-3, and Eberhart edged Terpko at No. 4, 6-3, 4-6, 1-0(10-1). It was Eberhart's 23rd singles win of her freshman campaign, moving her up to fifth in the UCF single-season record book (record is 28).
The trip to North Carolina will conclude when the Knights face off with UNC Wilmington Sunday at noon.
