AUSTIN, Texas. (UCFAthletics.com) - After three days of action-packed racing in Texas, the UCF Rowing team finished with four victories and took an overall finish of sixth place at the Longhorn Invitational. The Knights raced a total of 16 times over the course of the three-day regatta with each of its four boats earning a win.
On Friday, UCF matched up with Iowa. The Knights' novice 8 boat consisting of coxswain Kristy Peck, Alexa Ronelli, Ashley Flowers, Amy Compare, Andrea Hebditch, Adriana Chimelis, Christa Bergquist, Heidi Seymour and Jamie Peck picked up the first win of the event for the Knights with a time of 7.25.5, edging the Hawkeyes by 3.8 seconds. The UCF varsity four, varsity eight and 2 varsity eight posted times of 8:13.2, 7:09.1 and 7:17.1 respectively.
Saturday afternoon was the most successful session for the Knights as they earned three victories over conference-rival SMU in the varsity 4, varsity 8 and second varsity 8 races. The V4 team of coxswain Monica Rooker, Alexandra McManus, Cristina Sotomayor, Jackie Puterbaugh and Rachel diMonda cruised past SMU with a time of 8.34.8. Next up for UCF was the second varsity eight boat. The team of coxswain Heather Hart, Brianne Addison, Carly Burleson, Lauren Copeland, Erin Corrigan, Lauren Wasko, Dana Distefano, Kelly Thiele and Carla Ortiz topped SMU by over 23 seconds with a 7:24.5 time.
The final Saturday win for the UCF came from the varsity 8 squad. The team, consisting of coxswain Angela Zanicchi, Ginni Dunlop, Calena Illan, Alison Ponce, Camille Everett, Angelie Denizard, Olivia Staples, Kayla Thieken and Shelby Flynn, zipped past the Mustangs by 12.5 seconds with a time of 7:12.0.
UCF took on a talented Texas squad in the morning session on Saturday. The Knights battled hard in all four races, but were unable to come away with any wins against the host Longhorns. Strong winds lowered times, but made course steering difficult in Sunday's final session. The Black and Gold raced once against Kansas State and three times against Tulsa, but were unable to break through with a win on the final day
