ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Rookie RHP Zac Favre became just the third pitcher in program history to be named Conference USA Pitcher of the Week, the league offices announced Monday. This is the second weekly honor for the Knights this season (James Vasquez, Feb. 25).
Favre joined the company of Kyle Sweat (2007) and Caleb Graham (2009) to earn the weekly pitching laurels.
After netting his first collegiate win on March 10 at Jacksonville, Favre answered the bell three times out of the bullpen last week for the Knights and was lights out. He was unhittable in UCF's 5-2 win over Florida A&M, striking out nine of the 13 batters he faced for his second victory in three games.
He made two appearances over the weekend against Columbia, including 3 1/3 frames in Sunday's win for his first-career save. He entered the game with the bases loaded and two outs and needed just two pitches to get the Knights out of the jam.
For the week, he pitched 8.0 innings, allowing no runs on three hits, while striking out 11 and walking one batter. On the season, the 6-foot-3 righty owns the team's lowest ERA at 0.45 in a team-high 12 appearances out of the bullpen.
The Knights conclude their four-game series with Columbia Monday night with first pitch slated for 6:30 p.m. The finale matchup will also be Dollar Knight with $1 hot dogs and Coke products throughout the contest.
