ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - On a beautiful and sunny afternoon in Orlando, the UCF men's tennis team picked up where it left off Sunday and defeated Marquette, 5-2, Friday at the UCF Tennis Complex.
The Knights improved to 9-6 on the season and sustained their home success with another victory at the UCF Tennis Complex. UCF is now 6-1 when competing on its home court, which includes four-straight victories over Florida Gulf Coast, UConn, Cleveland State and now Marquette (8-7).
"The guys put together a solid win today against a gritty opponent that came for us and really wanted to win," UCF head coach Bobby Cashman said. "We did a great job setting the tone in doubles and singles action."
UCF jumped out of the gate on fire, claiming the doubles point after a sweep in all three matches versus the Golden Eagles.
Jorge Blasco's six-match winning streak came to a halt, after he was defeated for the first time since Feb. 15. The senior fell at the No. 1 position to Dan Mamalat, 6-3, 6-1. Despite the hindrance, UCF's winning streak never looked in jeopardy as the Knights claimed victories in four other singles contests.
At the No. 6 position, Francesc Aulina picked up his tenth victory, good for the second most wins on the team. He dominated Marquette's Javier Varela Vernani, 6-1, 6-4 in less than an hour.
Down 5-4, with two set points in the opening set, Matthew Gladstone roared back to win, 7-5, 6-1, over Logon Collins at the No. 4 spot.
Like Gladstone, Amar Hromic rallied back from a 6-5 first set deficit with Cameron Tehrani serving for set point. He then scored two points to win the first set, 7-6 (4). In a back and forth second set, the freshman came out on top with a 7-6 (4), 7-5 victory at the No. 3 slot to seal the Knights their ninth victory of the season.
Shortly after, Jose Sangroniz finished with another win, this time over Vukasin Teofanovic at the No. 2 position. The native of Spain dug deep in the second set and came back from a 5-2 deficit to clinch a 6-4, 7-5 victory.
"Hromic and Sangroniz finished off their opponents simultaneously in impressive fashion," Cashman added.
The Knights return to the court Wednesday for a showdown against Cornell. First serve is 2 p.m. at the UCF Tennis Complex and admission is free to the public.
