STATESBORO, Ga. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team is in fourth place after one round at the Schenkel Invitational, hosted by Georgia Southern. The Knights were 3-over in Friday's first round.
No. 41 UCF trails only No. 6-ranked Texas, No. 8 Florida and No. 4 Alabama after one round of play. The Knights currently lead three other ranked teams - No. 16 North Florida, No. 25 North Texas and No. 28 Vanderbilt.
Jose Joia paved the way for UCF on Friday, shooting a blistering 4-under to tie for a share of second place with three other golfers after the first round. Joia was 2-over after his first five holes, starting on the back nine. But he birdied 15 and 18 to pull even at the turn. Joia then put together birdies on No. 1 and No. 4 to move to 2-under. His birdie on the Par-5 7th dropped him to 4-under and gave him a share of the first-round lead.
Greg Eason and Ricardo Gouveia are tied for 30th for UCF after each going 2-over in the first round. The Knights' scoring was wrapped up by Kyle Wilshire, who was 3-over on Friday. McCabe Buege is also competing for UCF and was 6-over Friday.
The second round of the Schenkel Invitational is slated for Saturday morning, while the third and final round will wrap up the event on Sunday morning. Follow along with live scoring by clicking here.
