ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - For the first time in program history, the UCF softball team hosted a nationally-televised broadcast at the UCF Softball Complex. However, the Knights (14-12, 0-3 Conference USA) did not get the result they were looking for on Fox Sports Network as they were out-slugged, 8-2, by UAB. The Blazers (11-5, 3-0) hit three home runs and two triples on Sunday while the Knights managed just a single hit on the afternoon.
Trailing 3-0, freshman Samantha McCloskey provided an offensive spark for the Knights as she was tabbed to pinch hit with the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the fourth. McCloskey muscled a pitch on the inner half into centerfield for a two-run single to cut the Knights' deficit to just a run. The Detroit native picked up her 10th and 11th RBI with the base hit and joined teammates Jasmine Acevedo, Farrah Sullivan and Kalyn Cenal in the double-digit RBI club.
Sophomore Mackenzie Audas allowed nine hits and eight earned runs in 6.1 innings of work as she was tagged with her seventh loss of the season. The Plant City native issued two walks (one intentional) while striking out five. Freshman Shelby Turnier relieved Audas and didn't allow a hit in 0.2 innings of work.
Sophomore Maddy Schroeder was the latest Knight to terrorize the base paths in 2013 as she swiped back-to-back bags following a walk to get the UCF rally efforts kick started in the fourth. Schroeder is leading the team with a .333 average and has already set new career-highs with six RBI and 13 stolen bases.
UCF returns to action on Wednesday with a non-conference game against Liberty at 6:30 p.m. The Knights will celebrate 80's Knight with 80's trivia and music throughout the evening.
The Black and Gold have 12 home games remaining at the UCF Softball Complex, with season tickets for the 2013 season costing only $30. Single game and season tickets are available for purchase online at UCFAthletics.com and Ticketmaster.com, or by calling the UCF Athletics Ticket Office at (407) UCF-1000.
