HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team was all about making history on Sunday in its 75-51 win at Marshall.
Senior Gevenia Carter became the 16th Knight and Conference USA's ninth-active player to score 1,000 career points. Needing 10 points heading into the contest, she reached the milestone off a layup with 13:33 to go in the second half. She finished the game with 15 points, extending her double-digit game streak to nine.
She wasn't the only one solidifying her spot among the greats. Freshman Briahanna Jackson erased the 15-year-old conference freshman single-season steals record with her three steals against the Herd, bringing her total to 94.
Jackson filled the stat sheet with a game-high 19 points, six rebounds, five assists and just one turnover.
The duo was among four Knights who scored in double digits in the game. Junior Erika Jones, who wasn't sure she would be able to make the trip due to illness, contributed 11 to go along with a game-high 12 rebounds for her second-straight double-double. Sara Djassi rounded out the quartet with 12 points.
Jackson started the game hot with three 3-pointers from the wings to help UCF (13-16, 7-8) get out to a 10-point lead, 22-12. From there, the Knights struggled through a 5:37-minute drought while Marshall (3-12, 9-19) got back in the game with a 9-0 run.
The Herd eventually tied it up at 28 when Suporia Dickens sank a baseline 3-pointer, but Djassi quickly hit a jumper from the elbow to keep the Knights' edge. Jones ended the half with an inside jumper that rested the score at 32-30.
UCF hit its stride five minutes into the second half when Jackson hit a 3-pointer that started a 26-5 run that lasted eight minutes. The Knights played relentless defense with 10 steals off Marshall's 12 turnovers in the final 20 minutes.
One of those steals marked Jackson's record-breaking moment when she picked up an errant Herd pass at 14:11 and dribbled the length of the court before dishing a behind-the-back pass to Carter for a layup.
The Knights swept Marshall as Meghan Keough closed out the game with a wide-open 3-pointer to cap the score, 75-51.
