ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - When senior Gevenia Carter stepped out on the court Thursday in her final home game of the season, there was no denying whose night it was going to be.
Carter netted her eighth-straight game of double figures with a 21-point outing against her hometown team of Houston in UCF's 68-55 win over the Cougars (12-15, 6-8). Freshman Briahanna Jackson sank five 3-pointers en route to a game-high 22 points to go along with her seven rebounds and seven assists. It marked the second time this season that the pair each scored 20 points in the same game.
Refusing to be left out, junior Erika Jones recorded her fourth double-double of the year with 11 points and a game-high 18 rebounds.
Carter set the tone early with two steals in the first 40 seconds that helped UCF (12-16, 6-8) jut out to a 9-2 lead. The rest of the half was a back-and-forth battle, but the Knights got the final say when Jackson drove coast-to-coast for a layup to give her team a 30-29 advantage before the break.
UCF started to pull away midway through the second half on a 12-2 run that was capped when Sara Djassi stole the ball and found Jones underneath for a layup to take a 51-42 lead.
The Knights got into a bit of foul trouble, allowing Houston to climb back within 59-54 with roughly four minutes to play, but Jones converted two free throws to jumpstart a 9-1 run to close out the game.
UCF sank a season-best-tying eight 3-pointers and grabbed a season-high 51 boards, out-rebounding the Cougars by a margin of 14.
Following the game, the Knights honored their senior class of Carter and Kayli Keough with an on-court ceremony and special highlight video.
UCF will finish out the season on the road, heading first to Marshall on Sunday at 2 p.m. before the regular-season finale on March 7 at UAB.
