PONTE VEDRA BEACH, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF men's golf team will look for a top-three finish in Tuesday's final round of the John Hayt Invitational at the Sawgrass Country Club. But in order to do it, they'll have to hold off a large group of teams nipping at their heels.
The Knights entered Monday's second round in third place and remained in that position throughout the day. UCF is currently 9-over for the tournament. However, there is a logjam of four talented teams just two shots behind the Knights in a tie for fourth at 11-over.
North Florida, the event's host school, is in first place and sits 17-under par for the tournament. Second-place Duke is 5-under. The Ospreys and Blue Devils are the only two teams under par for the tournament. UCF is the only other team to score below par, doing so in the first round. Following closely behind UCF is the following quartet, all at 13-over: Arkansas, North Texas, Florida and LSU.
Individually, a pair of North Florida golfers hold the top two spots in the tournament, with Kevin Phelan at 13-under and Sean Dale at 9-under. UCF's Ricardo Gouveia (68-72) is in a tie for third with two others at 4-under for the tournament. Gouveia shot an even-par 72 in Tuesday's action. Greg Eason (69-77, +2) is tied for 20th place. Jose Joia (75-74, +5) is in a tie for 39th place. Kyle Wilshire (74-77, +7) is tied for 50th and rounded out the team scoring for UCF in the second round. McCabe Buege (78-76, +10, tie-63rd) is also competing for the Knights. Playing as an individual, Michael Visacki (77-81) sits at +14.
Tuesday's final round shotgun start is scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. Follow live scoring for the tournament by clicking here.
