ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF first baseman James Vasquez was named Conference USA Hitter of the Week Monday afternoon, the league offices announced. The Palm City native earned the laurels for the first time in his career after leading the Knights with a .462 average in three games last week.
The sweet-swinging lefty notched six hits in 13 plate appearances including a double and a pair of home runs while totaling a team-leading six RBI. He and designated hitter Jeramy Matos pace the Knights with eight RBI each.
Against Florida last Tuesday, Vasquez connected on an 0-1 pitch for his first-career home run in the sixth inning. He followed up his efforts with a five-hit weekend, including a monstrous 3-run blast in the first inning against Texas Tech after working the count full. He would later add a double and his first-career stolen base against the Red Raiders, a swipe of home on a double steal by the Knights.
Vasquez and his teammates will return to action with two mid-week games starting Tuesday when they host USF at 6:30 p.m., followed by their first road contest of the year at Bethune-Cookman Wednesday at 6.
