JACKSONVILLE, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Freshman Caroline Eberhart provided another memorable victory in her first year as a Knight as she notched the clinching point to help the UCF women's tennis team defeat North Florida, 4-3, Saturday in Jacksonville. The match lasted 5:17, and boosted the Knights' record to 7-3 in 2013.
"This was a big win and I'm incredibly proud of the team's fight today," head coach Stephanie Nickitas said. "It was a total team effort across the board. After more than five hours it all came down to one match and we had a freshman out there who stepped up and clinched the win. This is a huge confidence builder for everyone."
UCF greeted the Ospreys (4-3) by taking a 1-0 lead after doubles play. Jenna Doerfler and Sofia Baptista picked up the first win in an 8-3 decision over Marina Cunningham and Mariella Calderon at No. 3, while Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson closed the door on Lorena Aviles and Melanie Aguiree at No. 1, 8-6.
North Florida proved to be a difficult test in singles action, picking up three points with straight-set wins at Nos. 2, 4 and 6. Lorbergs had a straight-set victory of her own, though, by getting past Aviles at No. 1, 7-5, 6-3.
Needing two more wins to reach four points, UCF had two matches reach a third and deciding set. Haraldson secured the Knights' next point with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 triumph at No. 3 vs. Cunningham. That turned attention on the contest taking place at No. 5, and Eberhart embraced the opportunity, posting a 7-6(4), 4-6, 6-4 win over Rebeca Pereira.
Eberhart and Haraldson now lead the team with 16 singles victories apiece this season.
Staying on the road for its next match, UCF travels to Tampa to battle USF Wednesday at 2 p.m.
