ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - It took the UCF women's tennis team less than three hours to make quick work of Florida Gulf Coast Thursday in a 7-0 victory at the UCF Tennis Complex. The win allowed the Knights (6-3) to improve to 5-0 on their home courts this season.
"It was an impressive win today," head coach Stephanie Nickitas said. "I think FGCU was a strong team, and to come away with a 7-0 win is a great confidence booster going into Saturday's match. I'm really happy with our level of fight and intensity out here. We are taking care of our home matches, which is one of our goals this year."
UCF's top two doubles teams rolled to 8-3 victories to help the home team secure the first overall point against the Eagles (3-2). At No. 1, Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson defeated Morgan Bechtel and Bettina Botha, while Courtney Griffith and Caroline Eberhart took down Gyanna Mandic and Johanna Sterkel at No. 2.
In the best performance of the day in singles, Sofia Baptista surrendered just one game in her 6-1, 6-0 victory at No. 6 vs. Botha. Helping UCF clinch the match with straight-set wins, Haraldson dropped Sterkel at No. 3, 6-0, 6-3, Jenna Doerfler thumped Mandic at No. 2, 7-5, 6-3, and Eberhart posted a 6-4, 6-3 decision vs. Elizabeth Means at No. 5.
Delivering the shutout for the Black and Gold, Griffith used a third-set super-tiebreaker for her 7-5, 2-6, 1-0(10-6) triumph at No. 4 vs. Bechtel, and Lorbergs closed out the day moments later with her 6-3, 3-6, 6-1 victory at No. 1 against Sarah Means.
Getting back on the road, UCF travels to North Florida Saturday for a noon showdown.
