BOCA RATON, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Picking up its third shutout of 2013, the UCF women's tennis team collected a 7-0 victory at Florida Atlantic Saturday afternoon. It was the first road win of the year for the Knights, who improved to 3-1, while the Owls fell to 0-2.
Getting off to a hot start in doubles action, UCF's top pair of Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson had little trouble securing their fifth-straight win in an 8-1 affair vs. Taylor Briggs and Natalia Tomaszewicz. In each of the last four victories, Lorbergs and Haraldson have only given up three games or less.
To give the Knights the 1-0 team lead, the No. 3 doubles tandem of Jenna Doerfler and Sofia Baptista got by Catalina Ene and Natasha Phillips, 8-4.
The momentum continued into singles action where UCF notched four straight-set wins. At No. 1, Lorbergs delivered a 6-1, 6-3 decision against Marlene Ryan, and Haraldson toppled Natasha Basma at No. 3, 6-1, 6-2. Over at No. 5, Caroline Eberhart cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 triumph vs. Stephanie Cardullo, while Baptista finished her win at No. 6 over Claire-Mitchell Andrews by a score of 6-1, 6-2.
Preserving the shutout, Doerfler split the first two sets with Ene at No. 2 before claiming a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win, and Courtney Griffith was victorious in the closest match of the day at No. 4 against Tomaszewicz, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0(10-8).
After a two-match road trip, UCF is back in Orlando to take on Troy Friday, Feb. 8, at 10 a.m. as well as Furman Saturday, Feb. 9, at noon.
