ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team faced another warm, windy day at RedTail Golf Club Tuesday afternoon at the UCF Challenge. The Knights held off a late charge from Miami to secure a top-three finish in the event.
"At the start of the week, had you told me we would finish third I would have taken it," UCF head coach Emily Marron said. "Of course, we would have liked to beat conference foe Tulane, but they played very well today and we couldn't catch them."
North Carolina was the lone team to finish under par for the tournament, going 10-under to take the team title. Tulane pulled away from UCF on the back nine to finish 7-over and take runner-up honors in the team competition. The Knights were 12-over to take third, while Miami was one stroke back at +13.
Virginia's Briana Mao was the individual medalist. Her scores of 70-69-73-212 were good enough for a 4-under total. She hung on against Frida Gustaffson Spang (70-74-69-213), who carded a third-round 69 to rocket up the leaderboard and finish one stroke back.
UCF was paced by Monifa Sealy, who finished the tournament with a 2-over 218 to tie for 12th place. Robyn Doig turned in a 5-over 221 and tied for 21st, while Kaitlyn Price and Paola Robles were one stroke back in a tie for 28th. Mary Mulcahy tied for 36th as an individual, carding an 8-over total of 224. Carolin Pinegger shot 226 (+10), while individual players Valentina Fontaine (232, +16), Jessica Schall (237, +21) and Jordyn Hage (255, +39) wrapped up the Knights' contingent.
"I'm really happy with our consistency," Marron said. "We are getting better play out of our freshman Paola Robles, while Mo and Robyn continue to pace the group. We will take this momentum into next week."
UCF is back in action again Feb. 18-19 at the Central District Invitational, hosted by Michigan State. That tournament will be held in Parrish, Fla.
