ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Backed by a disciplined effort at the free throw line, the UCF women's basketball team won 83-62 over Memphis in Sunday's Knights for Education game. The Knights (9-14, 3-6) picked up their first sweep over the Tigers (13-10, 4-5) since 2009 in front of a crowd of 1,234 - the fifth-best single-game attendance during the Joi Williams era.
In a game that featured 56 combined fouls, the Knights made the most of their opportunity at the free-throw line, sinking 33-of-46 (71.7 percent). It marked a school-record number of free throws made in a game as UCF reached a season-high 83 points in its second-straight win.
Freshman Briahanna Jackson put up her sixth 20-point game and second double-double of the year with a game-high 29 points and a career-high-matching 11 rebounds. She also swiped seven steals.
Memphis freshman Ariel Hearn, who has interchanged with Jackson throughout the year for the title of Conference USA's top rookie scorer, was held to 11 points and a 3-of-16 showing from the field.
Senior Gevenia Carter also posted a season-high 23 points, sophomore Andrea Hines netted a season-high 10 points and junior Erika Jones added 10 rebounds and 8 points. Neither team gained much of an edge in the first 10 minutes, but UCF quickly got momentum on its side and never looked back.
Senior forward Kayli Keough worked inside for a jumper, and when Memphis misfired on a pass on its next possession, Carter was there to scoop up the ball and drive in for an easy layup. The exchange got the Knights rolling on a 17-1 run that extended their lead to 29-14 with 5:10 to play.
UCF got a boost just before halftime with 1.5 seconds remaining when Bilquis Abdul-Qaadir fouled Jackson on a 3-point attempt. The Memphis starter then was cited for a technical foul - putting her in trouble with four personal fouls -- that tacked on two more free throws for Jackson. The freshman coolly converted 4-of-5 from the charity stripe to send UCF into the locker room with a 36-21 advantage.
UCF's lead was never threatened in the second half, as time and again Memphis put the Knights at the free-throw line. Four Tigers fouled out of the game as the Knights converted 21-of-30 in the last 20 minutes of play.
