ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's golf team got off to a great start at its lone home event of the season Sunday. The Knights opened the UCF Challenge with a 1-under score of 287 to sit in a tie for second place in the 18-team event at RedTail Golf Club.

South Carolina (283, -4) holds the lead, while UCF is in a three-way tie with North Carolina and Augusta State just three strokes back. Tulane rounds out the top five with an even-par score of 288 after the first round.

I'm really proud of how the team fought today, UCF head coach Emily Marron said. They got off to a slow start and played the back nine under par. The course is score-able and there are low numbers out there. We are excited about a good opening round.

Robyn Doig paced the Knights. Her 3-under total of 69 has her in a tie for fourth place after one round of play. Monifa Sealy was also under par for the Knights, shooting a 71 to go 1-under on the day and put herself in a tie for 13th place. Carolin Pinegger was 1-over for the day with a 73 and currently is in a tie for 28th.

Robyn Doig had a career-low round for us and it was great to have the others back that up, Marron said.

The next best for UCF was Mary Mulcahy. Unfortunately, her 1-over 73 didn't help the Knights in the team competition as she was entered in the tournament as an individual. Paola Robles' 2-over total of 74 rounded out the team score for the first round. Kaitlyn Price shot a 4-over 76 as the fifth Knight competing in the team portion of the event.

Valentina Fontaine and Jessica Schall each shot 77 (+5) as individuals for UCF, while Jordyn Hage tallied a 6-over 78 as an individual.

A pair of Augusta State golfers are tied atop the individual leaderboard. Natalie Wille and Casey Kennedy were each 5-under on the day, shooting 67.

UCF tees off in Monday's second round at 10 a.m. Tuesday's third and final round begins at 8:45 a.m.
