ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - The UCF women's basketball team could not find its offensive rhythm at East Carolina on Sunday afternoon, dropping a 59-48 decision.
The 3-point game was the equalizer as UCF (7-14, 1-6) allowed the Pirates (15-5, 5-2) to convert nine treys - matching the highest total from an opponent this season. Meanwhile, the Knights sank just one.
UCF senior Gevenia Carter led the team with 17 points and a game-high six steals, and junior Erika Jones contributed 11 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
It was East Carolina's game from the get-go as the Pirates stifled the Knights the second they crossed half court with defensive traps and quick hands. They converted 18 points off the UCF's 13 turnovers, 10 of which were steals, in the first half.
The Knights finally started clicking on a 12-2 run midway through the second half but their hopes of pulling off one of their patented comebacks were extinguished when Celeste Stewart drained consecutive 3-pointers to swing the momentum back in the Pirates' favor.
To its credit, UCF continued to attack the rim and got into the bonus early. They made the most of their opportunity at the free throw line, draining 70.4 percent (19-of-27) for the game.
UCF returns to Orlando for a televised matchup against Marshall on Thursday at 7 p.m. The game, which is sponsored by the College of Sciences, will air on Fox Sports Network.
