ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - Another spectacular afternoon greeted the UCF women's tennis team on campus as it thumped Florida A&M Saturday, 7-0. The Knights did not surrender a point all weekend as they started the 2013 dual-match season with a 2-0 record.
"It was a really good two days out here, and we had a solid beginning to the season," head coach Stephanie Nickitas said. "It was great for the freshmen to get more matches, and we also had good leadership from the upperclassmen. We are really happy with the way the season has started."
Kicking off the day with doubles play, the Knights combined to give up only five games to sweep all three matches vs. the Rattlers (0-2). Posting a donut at No. 2, Courtney Griffith and Caroline Eberhart defeated Elysia Ortiz and Shani Williams, 8-0. At the No. 3 position, Jenna Doerfler and Sofia Baptista cruised by Victoria Williams and Alexis Dean, 8-2, while Genevieve Lorbergs and Josephine Haraldson came through with an 8-3 win at No. 1 against Bethany Holt and Symone Townsend.
As UCF posted an 8-0 victory in doubles, it also notched a 6-0, 6-0 decision in singles when Haraldson accomplished the feat at No. 3 vs. Townsend. Haraldson was a part of a singles lineup that won every match in straight sets.
Eberhart and Clare Mendell almost duplicated Haraldson as they issued only one game in their respective singles wins. Meanwhile, Lorbergs and Doerfler netted identical 6-2, 6-0 results, and Baptista completed the overall team victory with a 6-2, 7-5 win at No. 5 vs. Shani Williams.
With the weekend in the books including a 7-0 win against Bethune-Cookman Jan. 25, UCF travels to Florida Wednesday, Jan. 30, at 3 p.m., while it heads to Florida Atlantic Saturday, Feb. 2, at 11 a.m.
"Playing on the road is something that brings the team together, and we will definitely have a tough match against Florida on Wednesday," Nickitas said. "But home or away, we have to take care of our own business and go out and compete hard no matter where we are."
