ORLANDO, Fla. (UCFAthletics.com) - UCF has announced that the football team's 2013 season-opener vs. Akron at Bright House Networks Stadium will be scheduled for Thursday, Aug. 29. The two teams opened up their 2012 campaigns on Thursday, Aug. 30, last season with the Knights defeating the Zips, 56-14, in Ohio.
In 2012, the Black and Gold stormed out to a 35-0 lead at halftime en route to the victory in what was Akron head coach Terry Bowden's first game with his new program. Blake Bortles was 13-for-16 for 168 yards and three touchdowns, while UCF rushed for 206 yards and four touchdowns. The defense recorded three sacks in the win.
The Knights went on to post a 10-4 record on the season, claiming the Conference USA East Division title as well as a victory in the Beef `O' Brady's Bowl.
Akron leads the all-time series, 5-3, including a 2-1 record vs. UCF when both schools were members of the Mid-American Conference. Overall, the Knights are 2-2 at home vs. the Zips, with the last meeting in Orlando occurring at the Florida Citrus Bowl in 2004.
Entering 2013, UCF holds a 22-12 record in season-openers, highlighted by victories in its last seven contests. The last time the Black and Gold played the same opponent in back-to-back season-openers was during the 1990-91 seasons when it faced Troy.
More details regarding the 2013 UCF football schedule will be released when they become finalized.
